The Dervish Dancer Who By His Whirling Realises The Spiralling Of The Universe

Saturday, May 28th, 2005

I went to see a performance by some whirling dervishes with Taylor today. The performance was quite something and the music was absolutely spectacular. The affair certainly satisfied by curiosity and expectations as to the nature of dervishes. Low quality photos on moblog in a few moments.

Ok, just to let you know what whirling dervishes are, they are a Turkish sect of Islam that practices whirling meditation. Whirling meditation is, rather like it sounds, a meditation where the practitioner spins in a circle until they are so overwhelmed that they enter a gnostic state, often collapsing. In performance, the dervishes do not go fully to collapse, but they are still quite impressive.

P.S. The post title is stolen from the Vangelis song Dervish D (Inspired By The Dervish Dancer Who By His Whirling Realises The Spiralling Of The Universe).

Be a Tourist from Home

Friday, May 27th, 2005

The Internet continues to provide in new and fascinating ways. Already, the Internet has made it possible to interact with other human beings, get new movies, order food and so much more without leaving home. However, it has npt been possible to travel to far off places and see what there is to see; that has changed. With the advent of Google Maps (Satellite) it became possible to see far off places and take up Google Sightseeing.

For a few nice sights to start with, try: Bermuda (check the “wave-radiating aperature”), Forest Fires, Hernando Desoto Bridge (check the shadow), Cape Canaveral, Some Pretty Spot in Montana, Crop Field Pixel Art, Weird Nevada Triangle and many more.

I ate its heart with melted butter

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

At home a while back I was talked into eating an artichoke and I actually happened to like the thing. Since then I hadn’t eaten another but, as the result of a good spring salad I had two days ago, I decided to eat some plant matter today and while I was at the grocery store getting such necessities as Oreos, milk, ceral (Cracklin’ Oat Bran, oh yeah!), and such, one such item turned out to be an artichoke. I cooked the thing as was prescribed by the Joy of Cooking and ate it with some melted butter. So yeah, artichokes are good, even in the opinion of a primarily carnivorous person such as myself. Now for chips and dip.

I need more robotic arms

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

I saw Revenge of the Sith (Star Wars: Episode III) today and it gave me a thought that Spiderman 2 gave me: I am decidely lacking in the four robotic arms department. Aside from that, it was a fairly pretty movie with amuzing fighting and special effects. As far as plotskis go, it’s pretty much a linear interpolation between the end of Attack of the Clones (Star Wars: Episode II) and the beginning of Star Wars (Star Wars: Episode IV).

If you want a real review, bug someone else. If you can give me robotic arms, for the love of god, please do.

That Arnold Guy

Friday, May 20th, 2005

Yesterday I went to Arnold’s Arboretum with a bunch of friends. The place is absolutely beautiful and it has some terribly exquisite flora. Another point worth noting is the sheer size of the arboretum; it’s enormous (~2mi x ~.5mi). The arboretum houses the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection, which is probably the single most moving thing that I have ever seen. I highly recommend a visit to the arboretum for anyone.

No More Work For Me

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

I have just finished the last of the work that I need to do at MIT. In a few hours, I will go to campus print out a few things, hand in a few things, go to a few classes and then be all done.

Also, I decided that I might as well pull an all-nighter because it would be my last chance to justifiably do so at MIT.

No sleep study for me

Monday, May 9th, 2005

For the past week, I’ve been courting a sleep research study as a means of entertaining myself and making some easy money. The plan was to take part in a 32 day in patient study shortly after graduation and walk away with a cool $6k. Unfortunately, it turns out my current sleep schedule is too erratic to make me an acceptable participant in their study. All I have to say about that is, shucks.

Inorganic Polymers: The Paper

Monday, May 9th, 2005

As one of the last things that I have to do this week (in order to graduate), I have to write a 15+ page paper on the subject of Inorganic and Organometallic Polyers. I know enough about Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers to fill, at most, two or three pages. The only time that I’m going to have to write this paper is the next 28 hours. So as to be able to accomplish this task, I have obtained the following requisite supplies:

  • 1x Ray, N. H. — Inorganic Polymers
  • 1x Mark, James E.; et al. — Inorganic Polymers
  • 1x Archer, Ronald D. — Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers
  • 1x 2 liter bottle Mountain Dew
  • 1x 23.5 fluid ounce can Jolt Cola
  • 1x 23.5 fluid ounce can Jolt Blue
  • 4x 6.5 ounce Shur Fine Sausage Pizza
  • 1x 17 ounce box Cracklin’ Oat Bran
  • 1x 18 ounce container Duncan Hines Whipped Vanilla Frosting
  • 1x 1 gallon bottle Hood 2% Milk

Norton Internet Security can go Fuck Itself

Sunday, May 8th, 2005

A while back I put Norton Internet Security 2005 on my computer because I thought that it might be good to protect myself from some of the various dangers of the internet. It turns out that it was a stupid decision because Norton Internet Security has caused me more grief than anything else. The program, essentially, mangles and breaks your internet connection. Web pages will stop working, e-mail programs will stop working, things will break. What you’re supposed to do to overcome these problems is tweak some of the settings to allow certain things through but there isn’t good documentation on how to do that and half the time it doesn’t work. So, I’m fed up with that piece of crap and it can go fuck itself.

TTC Hapenings

Saturday, May 7th, 2005

I didn’t happen to meet any time travelers but I did hear some interesting talks on the matter and I got to see a DeLorean. If any time travelers were looking for me, you’ll have to try to find another way to meet me. Aside from that, I really want a DeLorean.

Time Traveler Convention

Saturday, May 7th, 2005

I’m going to go attend The Time Traveler Convention now. If any of y’all in the future want to meet me, this would be a great time to do so, otherwise I’m sure I’ll see some people that I know from the present.

Futzing with my server

Friday, May 6th, 2005

So I’ve been futzing with my server a bunch today (because I don’t want to write papers) and I’ve accomplished a few things. I’ve got a mailserver working (thats new for me). I’ve got my adminstration pages protected by SSL (also new). That’s the server work side of things.

On another front, I’ve decided to deprecate gwax’s sitings in favor of gwax’s wanderings. This is because I want somewhere that I can shove photos from my phone and I want it to have an e-mail based posting system. I will allow comments as soon as I can figure out a good way to prevent comment spam (which I expect will involve my modifyinig the WordPress bot-check plugin to work in EasyMoblog).

Debian and R-Type form…

Friday, May 6th, 2005

With their powers combined, Debian and R-type form my new server setup. Since I was getting pretty sick of using VNC to connect to r-type when I needed to change or fix something, I decided to get Linux up and running on it instead of Windows 2k. Having gone through the process, r-type is now running Debian, which gives me the wonderful powers of SSH and apt-get. SSH is the part that I really care about because I can now futz with things from my sidekick, any Linux machine and any Windows machine that I can put PuTTY on.

As a side advantage, I’ve managed to get SSL working so now I can deal with administering my blog and phpmyadmin over a secure connection.

Everything Is One Fewer Thing

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

Everything that I do is one fewer thing that I ever have to do. The problem set that I just finished for 3.063 is the last problem set that I’m ever going to have to do at MIT. The two papers that I intend to write this weekend will be the last papers that I’m ever going to have to write at MIT. When I turn in my thesis a week from Friday, it’s going to be the last thing that I ever have to turn in at MIT. Graduation will then be the last thing that I ever have to do at MIT. In a way it’s all very thrilling and liberating but in another way it’s a little depressing.
