The arm bone’s disconnected from the shoulder bone…

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

I had a bit of an interesting day today. I dislocated my left shoulder in a boating accident; most painful thing that I’ve ever experienced. It’s a good story and I’ll probably put up a longer explanation Monday (but I make no promises).

Team Vanguard, maybe

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

I spoke on the phone with a man from the boatbuilding company Team Vanguard, which is based in Rhode Island. I’ve had some correspondance with a couple of guys in the company over the past few weeks with regards to the possibility of trying to get an engineering job with them. They’re going to be doing interviews in a few weeks and with luck, I’ll get to be one of them. If all goes well, I’ll be a boatbuilding engineer next year; I’ll keep you all posted as things progress.

R.I.P. Scotty

James Doohan, the actor who played Scotty on Star Trek, just died at the age of 85. (Reuters, Bloomberg, Ars Technica)

Nessus and the White Hat game

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

So, I’ve been playing at the White Hat game at work of late and we’ve been playing around with a little program called Nessus that’ll help do vulnerability scans on you network and I’ve got to say, it’s a mighty impressive little piece of software.

I am Legend

Sunday, July 17th, 2005

Before ice block sledding last night, Dave and I encountered a bunch of younger folks on the golf course and we were informed that we, “Diesel Dave” and “The Beard Guy”, are legends. I have got to say, it’s pretty keen to be a legend, even if it’s for a bunch of teenagers.

Side note: If you’re looking for information on the book I am Legend by Richard Matheson, you should look somewhere else. That having been said, I did intend the reference and highly recommend the book

This is the Life

Sunday, July 17th, 2005

Last night, a bunch of the gang and I went ice block sledding, which is truly one of the most fun things one can do. After that, Dave, Julia and I went back to Dave’s place and sat around playing Scrabble for a while. If you add to that, playing go, sailing, partying and sitting around, you’ve got a pretty solid picture of what I do these days. It’s really quite pleasant all around. Of course, I do work on weekdays, but that’s kind of nice too.

Happy getting older thing Davey

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

My younger brother, Dave, turned 18 yesterday. I’m not normally the sort to be taken by surprise by such things, but it’s kind of bizarre to think that he’s no longer a minor. At least Joe’s still only 9, not that that’ll last forever.

Statistics again

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

I have set up the StatTraq plugin for wordpress to handle gathering statistical information on my blog and have made it publicly viewable for anyone that cares. There is also a small “Statistics” link in the Meta section of my sidebar now. In order to get it working, I started with StatTraq 1.0b and hand applied the patches from adsworth. So yeah, statistics are up and you should feel free to take a look at them.

Obviously, the statistics are incomplete as they only begin tracking as of a day ago.

Not quite so bad now

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

I woke up today, still in the funk that hit me last night but, since my morning shower, I’ve started to get over it a little bit. I’m going to be ok, just kind of pissed off for a while.

Son of a Bitch!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

My truck’s moonroof just exploded. I think that I will replace it with a piece of plexiglass.

Maritime Stress

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

Synchronicity had her first maritime difficulties today or, rather, I had my first difficulties with her today. She’s fine and, other than bruised egos, Dave and I are fine as well. Tomorrow, hopefully, we’ll do a better job.

The goings on of these days

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

I’ve been on the Cape almost a week at this point, began working yesterday and things have been mostly good. Unfortunately, the weather has been rather poor so I haven’t been able to go sailing since last weekend and it won’t get nice again until about Sunday. With luck, us folks here won’t let a little bad weather get in the way of our Friday night BBQ plans. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and let you all know that I’m still alive. George out.

Incidentally, if any of you all want to come visit me on the Cape, chillax and maybe do a little sailing, drop me a line (phone, email, IM, whatever).

Synchronicity: Voyage the First

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

My good friend Dave G.-L. and I took my Hobie, Synchronicity, out for a good, long, 5 hour sail today. She’s a beautiful boat; a little difficult to handle but great. She’s now beached not 100 feet from my grandparents’ place and ready for me to take out in the future.

Ah, Woods Hole, Hello Old Friend

Friday, July 1st, 2005

I am now back in Woods Hole for yet another summer and, I have to say, it feels nice. Some of the old crowd is around and we’ll have new folks too. And, as soon as this weather clears out, I’ll get some sailing in.
